The White City shopping centre Westfield proved that despite the bad weather, consumers were still prepared to part with their cash in the comfort of the sleek and chic West London shopping centre.
According to reports in the Evening Standard, "the results for the giant mall in Shepherd's Bush surpass those in the& West End, where like-for-like sales grew 6.1 per cent in January."
Michael Gutman, managing director Westfield UK/Europe, said: “It is pleasing to see the way in which the centre is gaining traction with the consumer."
Indeed, when it's cold outside and the weather is grime, there is no better place to indulge in a little retail therapy than Westfield, which boosts 265 stores and several fabulous dining experiences.
Gutman told the Evening Standard that “We're delighted with the number. We had a very good Christmas. When we started Westfield it was a green field location with no trading and we opened in the teeth of a very serious downturn. We're now seeing a strong performance as the building establishes itself. People understand the offer now.” He feels that the retail market in Britain was “definitely stabilising.” “We're seeing a much better start to 2010 than 2009, especially in terms of the number of administrations and bankruptcies across the country.”
Mr Gutman said Westfield's strategy was not about competing with the West End as a shopping destination: “I don't look at it as an alternative to the West End. I think there's a very large market in London and the South-East for everyone.”
“There's an undersupply of quality retail space. Retailers have done their cost-cutting and now they're thinking about growth but there are limited opportunities for flagship stores in London.”
Wesfield offers fabulous retail space with guaranteed footfall, if these figures are anything to go by, all under one "stunning roof."
